The AIADMK has strongly condemned remarks allegedly made by TVK MLA Karuppaiah in the Assembly regarding Jallikattu, the traditional sport of Tamil Nadu, and demanded that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay apologise for the remarks.
In a statement, the AIADMK said it was shocking that an MLA representing a constituency that includes Alanganallur, which is globally known for Jallikattu, had allegedly spoken disparagingly about the traditional sport.
The party questioned whether the MLA lacked an understanding of the long-standing relationship between Tamils and cattle reflected in the traditional practice of “Eru Thazhuvuthal”. It also questioned why the remarks were not removed from the Assembly records.
The AIADMK alleged that the remarks had raised doubts among the people of Tamil Nadu over the TVK government’s stand on Jallikattu. It demanded that the Chief Minister apologise for the MLA’s remarks and announce the government’s position on Jallikattu in the Assembly.
The AIADMK also referred to the 2017 Jallikattu protests and urged the Chief Minister to revisit a video statement he had issued at the time.
