A special Pattimandram (debate) on the topic “Social Media: A Boon to Society! A Bane to Humanity!” was held at Karunya Christian School, Karunya Nagar, Coimbatore, on August 29 as part of the 64th birthday celebrations of Dr. Paul Dhinakaran, Chancellor of Karunya University and Founder of Karunya Christian School.
The programme was presided over by Karunya Christian School Principal Dr. A. Benjamin, who highlighted the significant role of social media in contemporary society and stressed the importance of using it responsibly. He also emphasised the need to create awareness among students and the wider community about its positive and negative influences.
Dr. Raja of Karunya University moderated and inaugurated the debate. Supporting the view that social media is a boon to society were Mrs. Abila Shiny, Dr. Muthukumar Nadar of Karunya University, Dr. Visaltchi of Bharathiar University and Mr. Kunattson of Karunya Christian School. They highlighted the role of social media in communication, education, knowledge sharing, awareness and social development.
Arguing that social media is a bane to humanity were Dr. Revathy of Bharathiar University, Dr. Kingston Premkumar and Dr. Paulin Ebenezer of Karunya University, and Mrs. Janet Prabha of Karunya Christian School. They spoke about the negative effects of excessive and irresponsible use of social media on individuals, relationships and society.
At the conclusion, Dr. Raja delivered the verdict in favour of the view that social media is a boon to society. He said a developing society could not reject or completely distance itself from modern technology and stressed that social media should be used wisely for the progress and welfare of society.
Mrs. Cindrella, Head of the Tamil Department, Karunya Christian School, proposed the vote of thanks. Teachers, students and parents participated enthusiastically in the programme, which concluded with the National Anthem.
