Wild boars have been frequently spotted inside the Bharathiar University campus in Coimbatore, located close to the Marudamalai forest area, causing concern among students, security personnel and staff.
The university campus, situated adjacent to the Western Ghats, is also occasionally visited by other wildlife, including rabbits, sambar deer, elephants and leopards.
With the summer rains failing and water and food becoming scarce in the dense forest areas of the Western Ghats, wildlife has reportedly been venturing out in search of food and water. The animals are particularly active inside and around the university campus during night hours when there is little human movement.
Forest officials have advised students staying in university hostels, night-duty security guards and other staff to avoid venturing out unnecessarily at night and remain alert due to the movement of wild animals in the area.
In the latest incident, a wild boar was spotted inside the university campus around 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The animal was seen rummaging through plastic waste and consuming food waste lying on the premises. The visuals of the wild boar moving freely inside the campus have caused concern among the university community.
