Eye donation awareness workshop held at Coimbatore medical college

A special seminar and training workshop on eye donation was conducted at Coimbatore Medical College as part of the National Eye Donation Awareness Fortnight. The programme was jointly organised by the Tamil Nadu branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Coimbatore Medical College.
The programme, titled “Donate Eyes, Give The Gift Of Vision,” was attended by doctors, medical college professors, paramedical staff and medical students. Various sessions focused on the importance of eye donation and procedures involved in eye donation.
The programme began with registration and an eye donation pledge. Medical experts conducted detailed sessions on corneal blindness, eye donation procedures, eye bank services, anatomical procedures involved in eye retrieval and misconceptions surrounding eye donation.
Participants were also trained in counselling bereaved families of deceased persons and obtaining their consent for eye donation. A hands-on training session on eye retrieval techniques was conducted in the afternoon. During the break, medical college students staged an awareness skit on eye donation.
IMA Tamil Nadu State President Dr. P. Sridhar and Coimbatore Medical College Principal Professor Dr. M. Geethanjali attended the programme as special guests.
IMA Coimbatore president Dr. Goshal Ram, honorary secretary Dr. T. Parameswaran, treasurer Balamurugan, IMA Women Doctors Wing president Dr. Anusha Goshal Ram, IMA Tamil Nadu State President-Elect 2026 Dr. A. K. Ravikumar, Dr. C. P. Shanmugasundaram and Tamil Nadu Ophthalmologists Association president Dr. V. R. Vijayaraghavan were among those who
participated.
Dr. Palanisamy, Dr. Rajesh Babu, Coimbatore Medical College Vice-Principal Dr. Sujatha, Professor Dr. Sumathi, office-bearers of the ophthalmologists’ association, the Joint Director and Deputy Director of Health Services, and professors and heads of departments from the Ophthalmology and Anatomy departments of the medical college also attended.
Certificates were distributed to participants at the conclusion of the workshop.
