A Chippiparai breed dog in Dindigul has given birth to 17 puppies in a single delivery, attracting the attention of residents in the area.
Chandrasekar of Abirami Nagar on Natham Road has been raising a female Chippiparai dog at his home. The dog delivered 17 puppies on Friday, including 10 males and seven females.
According to Chandrasekar, he rescued the Chippiparai dog from the foothills of Sirumalai during the COVID-19 lockdown after finding it wandering without proper care. The dog had earlier given birth to 11 puppies in
2023.
He said the puppies would be given to relatives and friends with the aim of helping increase the population of the Chippiparai breed, which he described as being on the verge of decline.
Veterinary Assistant Surgeon Dr. Singamuthu of Sirukudi, who examined the dog and puppies, said Chippiparai dogs generally give birth to four to eight puppies. Delivering 17 puppies in a single litter was unusual, he
said.
The mother dog and all 17 puppies were found to be healthy, the veterinarian said.
