Co-optex told to procure more cloth from primary weavers’ societies: Minister

Handlooms, Textiles and Khadi Minister Vijaybalaji has directed Cooptex to procure more textiles from primary weavers’ cooperative societies to clear the stock of unsold cloth accumulated in the Chennimalai region.
Inaugurating the Diwali sales at the Vasantham Cooptex showroom in Erode on Saturday, Mr. Vijaybalaji said sales of bedsheets were expected to increase with the onset of the rainy season. He said Cooptex had also been instructed to increase the sale of powerloom products so that people could purchase clothes at affordable prices.
He said 10 new Cooptex showrooms had been opened in the State after the TVK government assumed office. New linen products for this year’s Diwali would also be introduced through Cooptex outlets.
The Cooptex has set a Diwali sales target of ₹100 crore this year. The Vasantham Cooptex outlets in Erode and Gobichettipalayam have been set a combined target of ₹1.85 crore, against sales of ₹1.43 crore during Diwali last year.
Mr. Vijaybalaji said Cooptex regularly introduced sarees with new designs and that lightweight Kora silk sarees would be introduced this year.
He added that the Karur Textile Park had produced more than 1,000 varieties of household textile products for export.
