Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group (CAG), Chennai, in association with Citizens Voice Coimbatore (CVC), organised a District Road Safety Conference at the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Coimbatore, calling for an actionable State Road Safety Action Plan and stronger inter-departmental coordination.
The conference brought together government officials, police personnel, medical professionals, road engineers, experts and civil society representatives to discuss measures to reduce road accidents and fatalities.
CAG representatives Nina Subramani and George Cheriyan highlighted excessive speed as a major factor in road crashes and stressed the need for data-driven interventions. District Road Safety Officer Er. Surendran called for coordinated efforts among departments, while retired Superintendent of Police M. Rathnam highlighted peak accident periods in Coimbatore.
RTOs S. Viswanathan and Poongothai discussed reforms in licensing and penalty systems. Civil engineer G. Manuneethi explained how roundabouts and U-turn systems could improve road safety and reduce ambulance response time.
Dr. David V. Rajan stressed the need for accessible footpaths, while Dr. P. Aravindh, Dr. N. Arvind N. and Dr. David Rajendran emphasised the importance of the Golden Hour in post-crash medical care.
