‘House Husband’ can be a new normal, says Madurai bench

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has observed that men should also be willing to take up household responsibilities and that the concept of a “house husband” should be accepted as a normal part of changing family and social structures.
The observation was made while hearing a divorce case involving a couple from Tiruvannamalai.
The court noted that changing lifestyles, professional commitments and social expectations can create conflicts in marital relationships.
The court observed that many working women fear that marriage could affect their careers and professional growth.
It said husbands should also be prepared to share household responsibilities to ensure a healthy balance in family life.
The judges emphasised that there should be mutual respect and understanding between spouses, both in their professional lives and in managing household responsibilities.
The court also observed that when women can take up the role of a homemaker, there should be no hesitation in accepting men taking up similar responsibilities at home.
The court subsequently passed appropriate orders in the divorce proceedings and disposed of the case.
