Karnataka to abide by SC directions on Cauvery, Mekedatu: Nivedita Alva

Karnataka will abide by the directions of the Supreme Court on the release of Cauvery water and the proposed Mekedatu dam project, said Congress All India Secretary Nivedita Alva here on Monday.

Addressing reporters, Ms. Alva said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi would visit Chennai on October 10 and interact with students at the Rajarathnam Stadium to hear their grievances and discuss issues concerning the education sector.

On the Election Commission issue, she said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, who had joined the INDIA bloc, would speak on the issue at an appropriate time. The issue concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls had now reached the Supreme Court, she said, adding that the court had not endorsed the entire exercise and that Congress had raised concerns over the deletion of names of genuine voters.

Rejecting the claim that the Congress had taken up the NEET issue only after the TVK-led agitation, Ms. Alva said the Congress and its student wing, NSUI, had raised the issue earlier and that the subsequent agitation followed it.

She said the Congress had taken up the issues concerning the SIR and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and alleged irregularities in the electoral process had been highlighted by The Indian Express.

She said the INDIA bloc would stage a rally in Delhi on Tuesday and that protests would be held across the country on various issues.

Ms. Alva said Mr. Gandhi’s visit to Chennai was aimed at listening to students and understanding their concerns relating to education.

Former MLA R.M. Palanisamy, Rajesh Rajappa, S. Gopi, M.M. Harshad, Muthukumar, Thiruselvam and other Congress functionaries were present.
