Trading in Erode’s weekly textile market gathered momentum this week as retailers and wholesalers increased purchases ahead of Navaratri and Deepavali. The night market, held from Monday evening to Tuesday, saw heightened participation from traders within Tamil Nadu and from neighbouring States. According to traders association president Selvaraj, the market was held around Gandhiji Road, State Bank Road and the Central Theatre area. Traders from Erode, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Namakkal, Salem, Karur and Dindigul set up stalls, while several others operated temporary roadside shops. The weekly market, which functions from Monday night into Tuesday, is a major wholesale and retail hub for textiles in the Kongu region.
A wide range of garments was on display, including shirts, T-shirts, trousers, jeans, chudidars, children’s wear, innerwear, sarees, nightwear, dhotis and cloth pieces. With Deepavali approaching, traders also stocked new-design garments and festive collections.
Buyers from various districts of Tamil Nadu visited the market to source textile varieties for retail sale. Traders from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala also made bulk purchases, contributing to stronger wholesale demand.
Textile traders said both wholesale and retail business was brisk owing to the festive season. They estimated that wholesale transactions accounted for about 40 per cent of the week’s business, while retail sales also contributed around 40 per cent. The market traditionally records higher footfall and turnover during festival seasons, with buyers from Kerala and other neighbouring States participating in bulk trade.
