Turmeric price rises ₹3,138 a quintal in Erode in four days

Turmeric prices continued their sharp upward movement in Erode, with the price of a quintal rising by ₹3,138 over the past four days. At Tuesday’s auction, turmeric sold at up to ₹22,989 a quintal, bringing cheer to farmers ahead of the new crop season.
Traders said the surge follows a steady firming trend in the market. Prices had already risen by up to ₹1,600 a quintal within a month, supported by lower arrivals and firm demand from stockists.
On October 13, only about 1,435 bags were reported sold at the market, indicating restricted supply rather than a broad-based surge in volumes.
Why prices are rising
Lower market arrivals: Reduced arrivals have tightened availability in Erode, one of India’s major turmeric trading centres.
Stockist demand: Traders and stockists appear to be building inventories amid expectations of firmer prices, adding upward pressure.
Quality premium: Better-quality finger turmeric is commanding a clear premium, with prices crossing ₹22,000 a quintal.
Seasonal positioning: With the new crop yet to arrive in full volume, buyers may be covering near-term requirements from existing stocks.
For Erode-region growers, the rally improves realisations after a prolonged period of weak prices. A price of nearly ₹23,000 a quintal is substantially above the modal rates recorded in early October, when Erode mandi prices were around ₹17,000–₹18,400 a quintal.
However, the sustainability of the rally will depend on arrivals over the coming weeks.
If new-crop supplies increase sharply, traders may slow purchases and prices could correct. Conversely, continued low arrivals and export or stockist demand could keep prices firm through the season.
