Naam Tamilar Candidate Karthika arrested in Dharapuram by-election cases

Naam Tamilar Katchi candidate Karthika, who contested the Dharapuram Assembly by-election, was arrested by Dharapuram police at her residence in Vilankurichi, Coimbatore, in connection with cases registered over election campaign-related incidents. Five others, including the party’s Dharapuram by-election in-charge Sanjay Gandhi, were also
arrested.
Karthika serves as the state women’s wing coordinator of Naam Tamilar Katchi. During the by-election campaign, she had strongly criticised the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and Chief Minister Vijay.
Police had registered three separate cases against Karthika and other party members following incidents during the campaign.
The allegations include staging a protest outside a police station, campaigning along the route taken by the Chief Minister, blocking a road, obstructing police personnel from performing their duties and making defamatory remarks against police officers and the Chief Minister.
In connection with one of the cases, police arrested Karthika at her Coimbatore residence on Tuesday morning. The other five accused were arrested in different parts of Tamil Nadu and are being brought to Dharapuram for further proceedings.
Eight special teams have been formed under Dharapuram Deputy Superintendent of Police Sivakumar to carry out the arrests. The action against the Naam Tamilar Katchi candidate and party members has drawn attention following the conclusion of the by-election.
