The Yellowbag Foundation completed its second annual ‘Diwali Dress Promise’ initiative in Madurai on Tuesday, providing new festival clothes to 1,000 children from low-income and single-parent families.
Rather than simply distributing pre-selected garments, the organisation set up an exclusive shopping event designed to give each child a normal retail experience.
During registration, the children received dummy currency, which they used to choose their own outfits from a collection. After making their selections, the items were packed and given to them with a bill to replicate a standard store purchase.
Founder of Yellowbag Foundation Krishnan stated that the goal was to provide a dignified shopping experience for children who might otherwise miss out on festive traditions due to financial hardship.
The event was a unique experience not just for the children, but also for their teachers, caregivers, volunteers and the entire team that came together to make it happen.
The gathering was attended by Madurai North MLA A. Kallanai and Thiagarajar Mills Director Visalakshi Kannan as chief guests. Organisers noted that the programme aimed to make festival celebrations more accessible to disadvantaged families in the region.
