Motorists driving above 30 kmph on the newly opened G.D. Naidu Flyover in Coimbatore will face strict action, City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar has cautioned.
Speaking to reporters yesterday, the Commissioner said that heavy traffic congestion has been reported at the Uppilipalayam Roundabout, where the flyover connects to Avinashi Road. “Motorists descending from the flyover are often unsure about the correct exit routes, leading to confusion and traffic buildup. Additionally, vehicles from various areas converge near the Mem Bridge, further intensifying congestion,” he said.
To tackle this, work is underway to install a new traffic signal at the Uppilipalayam junction. “Currently, vehicles from the old Anna Flyover are allowed to proceed straight toward the LIC junction and take a U-turn. Once the new signal becomes operational, traffic will return to normal flow. Several adjustments are also being made to ease congestion,” he added.
The Commissioner noted that discussions are ongoing with Highways Department officials, who have agreed to widen the service road near the junction. “Once the road is expanded, traffic congestion will significantly reduce,” he assured.
Emphasizing road safety, Mr. Saravana Sundar said, “Vehicles using the Avinashi Road flyover must not exceed 30 kmph. To monitor this, AI-enabled surveillance cameras will be installed at key points along the flyover. Any vehicle found speeding will automatically be detected, and fines will be issued digitally.”
