Former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Sunday said that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) would come back to power if the disunity among opposition parties continued.
He paid homage at the Marudhu Pandiyar Memorial in Kalayarkoil, Sivagangai district, on the occasion of Guru Puja and later spoke to reporters.
“The bravery and sacrifice of Periya Marudhu and Chinna Marudhu are admired and respected across the world. On my behalf, I have adorned the statues of the Marudhu Pandiyars with silver armour as a mark of respect,” Panneerselvam said.
Referring to the political climate, he remarked that the continuing lack of unity among opposition parties was a worrying sign. “If this situation persists, the DMK will once again win the Assembly elections and return to power,” he warned.
When asked about actor Vijay’s recent gesture of reaching out to the families of victims of the Karur campaign rally tragedy, Panneerselvam said, “There are several reasons for Vijay calling and consoling those families and later speaking in Chennai. I do not wish to elaborate further at this moment.”
Turning to intra-party matters, Panneerselvam reaffirmed his efforts to restore unity within the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). “When MGR founded the AIADMK, he made it clear in the party constitution that the General Secretary must be elected by the party workers. MGR also ensured that this rule could not be altered under any circumstance,” he said.
“However, Edappadi K. Palaniswami has amended the rule, making it sufficient if ten district secretaries propose and approve the post. This change goes against the very principles laid down by MGR. We have filed a case against this amendment, and the Chennai Civil Court is presently investigating the matter. We are awaiting the final verdict,” he added.
Panneerselvam also expressed confidence that truth and justice would prevail. “Our objective is to bring back the AIADMK’s original structure, restore cadre-based democracy, and unite everyone who believes in MGR’s ideals,” he said.
Sivagangai District Secretary Asokan and advocate Sundarapandian were present during the media interaction.
