Tension gripped Hosur after a hidden camera was found installed inside the bathroom of a women’s hostel housing female workers employed at a Tata company, leading to an overnight protest by hundreds of women.
According to police, Neela Kumari (23), a native of a northern state, was arrested for allegedly fixing the hidden camera inside the hostel bathroom. Investigations revealed that she had recorded videos using the device and sent them to her boyfriend. One of these videos later went viral on social media, exposing the act.
The incident came to light on Tuesday evening (Nov. 4), after which more than 1,000 female workers gathered in front of the hostel, demanding swift action. The protest continued through the night despite appeals from the Hosur Sub-Collector and the District Superintendent of Police (SP) to disperse peacefully.
Later, the police conducted an intensive search of the women’s hostel premises using metal detectors to check for any additional hidden cameras.
The protesting women demanded the immediate arrest of all those involved, the removal of hostel wardens accused of mistreatment, and a complete inspection of the hostel. In the early hours of Wednesday, around 400 protesters attempted to block the Uddanapalli–Rayakottai Road, prompting police intervention. The women were taken back to the hostel by company buses and assured that their demands would be fulfilled. The protest ended around 5 a.m.
Meanwhile, Neela Kumari is being interrogated to determine whether others were involved in the act. Security has been tightened around the women’s hostel as parents of several workers have begun arriving in Hosur following reports of the incident.
