Coimbatore heist cracked in 24 hours: police shoot Down UP burglars

A massive burglary spree in the Kaundampalayam Housing Board complex was cracked within 24 hours after police tracked down and shot three members of an interstate gang from Uttar Pradesh, who allegedly attempted to attack officers while fleeing.
The Housing Board settlement—comprising 1,848 flats mostly occupied by government staff—was rocked on Friday when 13 houses across Block A and Block C(3) were found broken open. The burglars targeted homes that were locked during the day, prising open the doors and escaping with valuables.
Initial reports pointed to small losses, but a detailed inspection uncovered the full scale of the heist: 56 sovereigns of gold jewellery, Rs 3 lakh in cash and several silver articles were looted.

One Revenue Officer alone reported losing 30 sovereigns from her residence.
City Police Commissioner A. Saravanasunder visited the spot. Sniffer dogs, fingerprint experts and forensic teams were deployed, and three special investigation teams were formed to track down the culprits.
Acting swiftly on leads, police traced the suspects to Kulathupalayam near Kuniyamuthur. When the gang allegedly attempted to escape and attacked police personnel, officers opened fire, injuring three men.

The suspects—aged 35 to 40—were confirmed to be from Uttar Pradesh and were admitted to the Coimbatore Government Hospital. Police said the breakthrough came within a day of the break-ins and added that further investigation is underway to identify accomplices and check for similar interstate operations linked to the
gang.
