In a tragic incident in Thrissur district, a 30-year-old woman allegedly killed her five-year-old son before ending her life by hanging, police said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at Ambalakavu in Thrissur. Mohit, 34, an employee of a private financial company, lives there with his wife Shilpa and their son Akshayajit. On the night of the incident, Mohit, who was suffering from fever, slept in a separate room, while Shilpa and the child slept in another room. Mohit’s mother was also in the house, sleeping in a different room.
When Shilpa and the child did not come out of the room even after midnight, Mohit knocked on the door but received no response. He then peeped through a window and was shocked to find his son lying motionless on the bed and Shilpa hanging inside the room.
The Peramangalam police were alerted and rushed to the spot. After breaking open the door, police found the child dead and the woman hanging. The bodies were sent to the Thrissur Government Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Preliminary investigation suggests that Shilpa killed her son before taking her own life. The exact motive behind the incident and the manner in which the child was killed are yet to be ascertained.
Police have registered a case and further investigation is under way. The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the locality.
