Terror gripped the Shalimar Bagh area on Sunday after a woman who was a key witness in her husband’s murder case was shot dead in broad daylight by unidentified assailants.
The victim, Rachana Yadav (44), a resident of Shalimar Bagh, was the president of the Shalimar Bagh Welfare Association.
In 2023, her husband Vijayendra Yadav was shot dead by unidentified persons in front of her. Rachana was the prime eyewitness in that case, in which five persons were later found guilty.
Police said that on Sunday morning, Rachana stepped out of her house to visit a nearby shop in the Shalimar Bagh area when two men on a motorcycle approached her and opened fire. She sustained critical injuries and died while being rushed to a hospital.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the murder may be linked to her role as a witness in her husband’s murder case. Police suspect that the same criminal network involved in the earlier killing could be behind the attack, possibly to prevent her from testifying further. CCTV footage collected from the area reportedly shows two men arriving on a motorcycle, firing at Rachana and fleeing the scene immediately after the attack.
Senior police officials visited the spot and conducted inquiries.
A case has been registered, and multiple teams have been formed to identify and arrest the suspects.
The incident has raised serious concerns over witness protection and public safety, with residents expressing shock over the killing in a busy residential locality.
