An 80-year-old man who had built his own grave years ago, stating that he did not want to burden his children after his death, passed away due to ill health and was buried in the same tomb as per his final wish in Telangana’s Jagtial district.
The deceased was identified as Indraiah, a resident of Lakshmipuram village in Jagtial district. He is survived by his children. Several years ago, Indraiah took the unusual decision to construct a tomb for himself near the grave of his wife, explaining that he wanted to ensure that his children would not be disturbed or burdened after his
death.
He engaged a mason from Tamil Nadu and had a marble tomb constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 12 lakh. Since its construction, Indraiah reportedly visited the tomb daily, cleaned the surroundings, watered plants and spent time sitting near it. His routine drew attention in the village and became a subject of discussion over the years.
Indraiah passed away on January 11 following age-related illness. Honouring his long-standing wish, family members laid him to rest in the tomb he had personally built.
Indraiah’s earlier remarks to the media resurfaced after his death. In one such interaction, he had said that while some people were saddened by his decision to build his own grave, it gave him peace and happiness. He had also mentioned that he had built five houses, a school and a church during his lifetime. He had left a message inscribed on the tomb stating that death is inevitable and that no one can take their wealth with them in the end.
