Child in one hand, duty in the other

A woman police constable in Andhra Pradesh has won widespread admiration after she displayed exemplary presence of mind and dedication by clearing a major traffic jam while carrying her infant child in her arms, ensuring the safe passage of ambulances.
The constable, identified as Jaya, is attached to the Rangampeta police station. A few days ago, while on her day off, she was travelling with her infant along the Kakinada–Chamalakota road.
At that time, an unexpected traffic congestion brought vehicular movement to a complete halt, with vehicles lined up for a long distance. Amid the chaos, two ambulances attempting to pass through the stretch were stuck in the
jam.
Despite continuous sirens, the vehicles ahead failed to give way, delaying the emergency movement and raising concerns over the patients’ safety.
Noticing the situation, Jaya immediately stepped in, even though she was not on official duty.
Holding her infant securely in one hand, she began directing traffic with the other.
For nearly 15 to 20 minutes, she stood on the road, regulating vehicles, easing congestion and creating a separate corridor for the ambulances.
Her timely intervention helped clear the jam and allowed the ambulances to proceed towards the hospital without further delay, potentially saving precious lives.
Bystanders recorded the scene on their mobile phones, and the video soon went viral on social media.
The visuals of the constable balancing motherhood and professional responsibility struck a chord with viewers across the state.
Following the video’s circulation, the Andhra Pradesh Police department and senior officials praised Jaya for her sense of duty and commitment.
She was also formally honoured for her commendable service.
