A gruesome murder allegedly committed by a retired railway employee has sent shockwaves across Uttar Pradesh after it emerged that the accused killed a woman, burnt her body and attempted to dispose of the remains by transporting them in a locked iron box.
The victim, identified as Preeti, aged 32, hailed from the ITI area of Jhansi. Though married, she had reportedly been in a relationship with Ram Singh, 62, a retired railway employee.
The relationship later turned into a live-in arrangement, with the couple frequently staying in a rented house in the Laser Cone area. Ram Singh already has two wives and was living with Preeti as his third
partner.
Police said frequent quarrels erupted between the two over money. During one such argument about a week ago, Ram Singh allegedly assaulted Preeti, leading to her death.
In a bid to destroy evidence, he reportedly chopped the body into pieces, placed them inside a large iron box, stacked firewood over it and set it on fire.
The remains were reduced largely to ashes and bones. To dispose of the remains, Ram Singh hired a goods auto, locked the iron box and transported it towards the Sibri Bazaar area.
However, the auto driver grew suspicious due to Ram Singh’s nervous behaviour and a foul smell emanating from the box. He alerted the police immediately.
By the time police arrived, Ram Singh had fled. The iron box was seized, and forensic examination later confirmed the presence of charred human remains.
A case has been registered, and police have questioned Ram Singh’s wives. Investigators are also probing a possible role of his son in the crime.
A manhunt is under way to trace the absconding accused, while the brutality of the crime has caused widespread outrage across the
state.
