Three persons were killed on the spot in a tragic road accident involving a lorry, a cargo vehicle and a two-wheeler in the Namakkal town area during the early hours of Tuesday.
Police said a lorry was proceeding from Tiruchy towards Namakkal, with a mini cargo vehicle following it.
While crossing the Namakkal–Tiruchy railway overbridge, the cargo vehicle rammed into the lorry from behind.
Due to the impact, the goods vehicle lost control, swerved across the road and collided with a two-wheeler carrying three persons.
All three two-wheeler riders died instantly at the spot.
The driver of the cargo vehicle sustained serious injuries in the accident and was rushed to the Namakkal Government Medical College Hospital, where he is undergoing intensive treatment.
Preliminary inquiries suggest that the accident may have occurred as the cargo vehicle driver was allegedly driving in a drowsy condition. The Namakkal City Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
Efforts are under way to establish the identities of the deceased and trace their native places. Further investigation is in progress.
