Velliangiri hill trekking to resume from February 1

Trekking to the Velliangiri Hills near Coimbatore will be permitted from February 1 following a court directive, ahead of the usual March-to-May season, forest department officials said on Thursday.
The Velliangiri Hills, located at the foothills of the Western Ghats, are home to the Velliangiri Andavar Temple, where the deity is worshipped as a swayambu lingam on the seventh hill.
Popularly known as Thenkailayam, the pilgrimage involves a strenuous trek through dense forest terrain and steep slopes.
Traditionally, trekking is restricted during the winter months due to adverse weather conditions and safety concerns.
However, in compliance with a court order, authorities have decided to allow devotees to undertake the climb from February 1, subject to stringent safety regulations.
The Coimbatore District Forest Officer said only devotees who undergo medical screening and are certified physically fit will be allowed to trek. Persons with health issues have been advised not to attempt the climb. An ambulance will be stationed at the foothills, while medical camps will function on the third, sixth and seventh hills along the route.
Forest personnel, medical teams, foresters and fire and rescue services will be deployed at key points.
An eight-member monitoring team will patrol the hills to ensure safety and compliance with regulations. The official said strict prohibition will be enforced on carrying plastic items and intoxicants.
Plastic packaging brought by devotees will be removed at the base and food items will be handed over in paper covers.
Recalling that nine devotees lost their lives during last year’s trekking season, the official said all precautionary measures are being taken to prevent fatalities and urged pilgrims to strictly follow safety instructions and complete the trek responsibly.
