Four devotees undertaking a pilgrimage to the Samayapuram temple were killed in a tragic road accident near Siruvachur in Perambalur district on Friday.
According to police, the victims were part of a group of Samayapuram padayatra pilgrims walking along the roadside when a car travelling from Chennai to Tiruchirappalli rammed into them.
The impact of the collision was severe, killing all four devotees on the spot.
Police sources said three of the deceased hailed from Cuddalore district, while one was from Salem district.
The bodies were recovered from the accident site and sent to the Perambalur Government Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The car involved in the accident was driven by a man from Thiruvallam near Chennai.
Police have arrested the driver and seized the vehicle.
Preliminary inquiries suggest that the car may have lost control before hitting the pilgrims, though the exact cause of the accident is under investigation.
A case has been registered, and further investigation is in progress.
