Young woman dies by suicide allegedly due to dowry harassment in Karnataka

A 24-year-old woman died after consuming poison allegedly due to dowry harassment in Hassan district of Karnataka.
The deceased, Indira, was a resident of Hunasekare village in Belur taluk. She was married four years ago to Sami of H. Mailalli village in Hassan taluk. At the time of marriage, her parents had reportedly given 60 grams of gold and Rs 1.30 lakh in cash as dowry.
According to the complaint filed by Indira’s parents, the couple did not have children even after four years of marriage, which led to frequent quarrels.
They alleged that Indira was subjected to continuous harassment by her husband Sami, mother-in-law Sankaramma and sister-in-law Putti, demanding additional dowry.
Police said Indira frequently returned to her parental home due to harassment and was later persuaded by her parents to go back to her husband’s house. Sami, who had earlier been running a bakery, reportedly shut it down after incurring losses and later worked as a daily wage labourer.
He allegedly demanded more dowry to restart a business and also harassed Indira by casting doubts on her character.
Following a quarrel two days ago, Indira allegedly consumed poison. She was rushed to the KIMS Government Hospital in Hassan, where she died during treatment.
Based on a complaint from her parents, the Dutta police have registered a case against her husband and in-laws on charges of dowry harassment and abetment of suicide. Further investigation is under way.
