A 33-year-old woman was arrested in Karnataka for allegedly smothering her mother to death after believing an astrologer’s claim that she had used witchcraft to cause her husband’s death.
Police said Suchitra, a resident of Anupanahalli village, had been grieving the loss of her father who died around 18 months ago. Seeking answers, she reportedly consulted an astrologer who allegedly told her that her father’s death was the result of black magic performed by her mother, Pushpavathi, 55.
Investigators said Suchitra developed deep resentment towards her mother following the claim. In the early hours two days ago, Pushpavathi was allegedly smothered with a pillow while she was asleep at home.
Suchitra is said to have attempted to pass off the death as natural and made hurried arrangements for the funeral. However, villagers grew suspicious after noticing injuries on the body and alerted the Kittachandra police.
During questioning, Suchitra allegedly confessed to the crime, claiming she acted out of anger over the astrologer’s statement. Police have arrested her and are probing whether her husband had any role in the incident.
The shocking episode has sent ripples through the region, highlighting the dangers of blind faith and superstition.
