Twenty-five fishermen from Karaikal were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on charges of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line while fishing, sources said on Sunday.
According to reports, two mechanised fishing boats from Karaikal were intercepted by Sri Lankan naval personnel near the Karainagar sea area off the northern coast of Sri Lanka. The fishermen were taken into custody and the boats were seized.
The detained fishermen were reportedly taken to the Kankesanthurai Naval Camp for inquiry. After preliminary investigation, they are expected to be handed over to officials of the Sri Lankan Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Jaffna for further legal proceedings.
The incident has once again triggered concern among the fishing community in Karaikal over recurring arrests by the Sri Lankan Navy in the Palk Strait region.
