Organs of brain-dead newlywed donated

In a noble act of organ donation, the organs of Mahesh (23), a kabaddi player from Avarikulam in Tirunelveli district, were donated after he was declared brain dead following a road accident.
Mahesh, who had married a woman from Marungur in Kanniyakumari district eight months ago, suffered severe injuries in a motorcycle accident on the Kavalkinaru bridge on February 16 and was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital, Asaripallam. Despite treatment, doctors declared him brain dead.
With the consent of his wife, the family agreed to donate his kidneys, liver and eyes. A medical team performed the organ retrieval surgery, benefiting five patients.
One kidney and the liver were sent to hospitals in Tiruchy, another kidney to Karaikudi, and the eyes to a hospital in Nagercoil. Police created a green corridor to ensure swift transport of the organs.
