₹15 Cr silver heist: 700 kg of silver stolen from Salem workshop

A gang of unidentified men allegedly assaulted a security guard and stole 700 kg of silver anklets and other silver articles worth an estimated Rs. 15 crore from a silver workshop near Salem late on Sunday
night.
The workshop is owned by Balasubramaniam, a resident of Chinneri Vayakkadu in Salem district. He operates the unit near Salem New Bus Stand, manufacturing silver anklets and other silver articles for sale to jewellery shops and customers in various
States.
With the Deepavali festival approaching, production had reportedly been under way at the workshop for more than a month to meet increased demand.
According to the complaint, the gang attacked the security guard, tied his hands and broke into the workshop before fleeing with the silver articles. Preliminary police inquiries indicated that the intruders had also damaged the workshop’s CCTV cameras to prevent identification.
Based on a complaint lodged by Balasubramaniam, Pallapatti police registered a case and launched a search for the suspects.
Salem City Police Commissioner Babu visited the workshop and inspected the scene as part of the investigation. Further inquiries are under way to establish the sequence of events and trace the stolen silver.
