The Department of Physics of PSGR Krishnammal College for Women organised a three-day Science Academies Lecture Workshop on Mathematical Physics from March 2 to 4 on the college campus.
The workshop was sponsored by the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bengaluru, the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, and The National Academy of Sciences, India, Prayagraj, with the aim of promoting scientific research and strengthening understanding in mathematical physics among students and faculty members.
The programme was inaugurated by M. Lakshmanan, Professor of Eminence and DST-ANRF National Science Chair, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, along with Govind S. Krishnaswami, Professor, Chennai Mathematical Institute, Chennai, and V. K. Chandrasekar, Associate Professor, Centre for Nonlinear Science and Engineering, School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, SASTRA Deemed University, Thanjavur.
The event was presided over by P. B. Harathi, Principal of PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, while N. Yesodha Devi, Secretary, also participated in the inaugural session.
During the workshop, experts from the science academies delivered lectures highlighting recent developments and research trends in mathematical physics.
Lakshmanan, a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Physical Sciences and the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar Vigyan Shri in 2024, emphasised the importance of mathematical physics in understanding complex physical concepts and solving real-world problems. He encouraged students and researchers to build a strong foundation in mathematics and actively participate in research-oriented learning.
Around 150 students and faculty members from various colleges across Tamil Nadu participated in the workshop.
The programme concluded with a valedictory function. Organisers said the workshop provided participants an opportunity to learn advanced mathematical techniques used in modern theoretical and applied physics and to interact with leading experts in the field.
