Family’s tearful farewell as Court allows Euthanasia for Ghaziabad man

In a rare and significant development, the Supreme Court permitted withdrawal of life support for Harish Rana, a Ghaziabad resident who had remained in a coma for 13 years following a severe brain injury.
Harish Rana sustained critical injuries in 2013 after falling from the fourth floor of his hostel while pursuing B.Tech at Panjab University in Chandigarh. Despite prolonged treatment and medical care over the years, he never regained consciousness. His parents later approached the Supreme Court seeking permission for passive euthanasia.
Acting on the plea, the court allowed withdrawal of life support, upholding the right to die with dignity under established legal principles. The process was carried out at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi under medical supervision.
A video capturing the family’s final moments with Harish Rana has surfaced online, drawing widespread emotional response. In the footage, family members are seen bidding a tearful farewell, while a representative from the Brahma Kumaris offers prayers and applies tilak.
The case has once again brought focus on end-of-life care and legal provisions surrounding passive euthanasia in India, highlighting the emotional and ethical complexities faced by families in prolonged medical conditions.
