Auto driver turns innovator to beat Salem heat

With temperatures soaring beyond 100 degrees in Salem, an elderly auto driver has come up with a unique solution to help passengers cope with the intense summer heat.

Subramani, 77, a resident of the Mamangam area, has been driving an autorickshaw for the past 15 years. To shield passengers from the scorching conditions, he has modified his vehicle with a simple yet effective cooling system.

The auto’s roof has been layered with thermocol sheets, straw, and corn cobs to reduce heat absorption. In addition, a small motor has been installed to spray water continuously over the top, helping to keep the interior cool.

The initiative has drawn attention from commuters, as the vehicle offers noticeable relief from the heat. Subramani has also arranged drinking water for passengers, further enhancing comfort during travel.

Passengers have welcomed the effort, describing it as both thoughtful and practical amid the rising temperatures.
