Panic gripped visitors at Marina Beach after a parked car caught fire and was completely gutted on Tuesday morning.
Srinath, a software engineer, had driven to the Marina to watch the sunrise and parked his vehicle along the service road before heading to the beach.
On returning after some time, he noticed the car suddenly engulfed in flames.
The fire spread rapidly across the vehicle, sending thick black smoke into the air and alarming morning walkers and the public in the vicinity. Police and fire services were immediately alerted.
Personnel from the Thiruvallikeni Fire Station rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control. However, the car was reduced to a charred shell.
No injuries were reported as the vehicle was unoccupied at the time of the incident, preventing any casualties.
Police have launched an investigation to ascertain whether the fire was caused by an electrical fault or any other reason.
