A sharp increase in commercial LPG cylinder prices has led to an immediate rise in food prices across hotels in Chennai, with items such as parotta and biryani witnessing noticeable hikes.
Hotel operators said the price of a 19-kg commercial cylinder has risen to Rs. 3,237, following a hike of Rs. 993.
The cost of smaller 5-kg cylinders has also increased by Rs. 261, adding to the burden on eateries.
As a result, the price of parotta has gone up to around Rs. 25 in several hotels, while biryani prices have been raised by about Rs. 10 in some establishments.
Restaurant owners expressed concern that the increase in input costs has forced them to revise menu prices by nearly 10 per cent.
They noted that while expenses have surged, customer footfall has shown signs of decline.
The hike has been attributed to supply constraints in commercial cylinders, reportedly linked to global factors including tensions involving Israel and Iran.
Hoteliers and customers alike have voiced dissatisfaction over the rising costs, urging the Central Government to consider reducing cylinder prices to ease the burden on both businesses and the public.
