Personnel of the Singappen Special Force, launched to strengthen women’s safety across Tamil Nadu, will be provided firearms if required, IG Bhavaneeswari said on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters at the DGP’s office, she said the force has been created to prevent crimes against women and ensure rapid response during emergencies. The personnel will patrol public places, bus stands, offices and other areas frequently used by women.
Bhavaneeswari said the force would identify vulnerable locations and work closely with the Crime Against Women and Children Wing, All Women Police Stations and volunteers to prevent offences and create awareness.
A total of Rs 357 crore has been allocated for the initiative, and 2,545 police personnel will be recruited. Currently, 70 Singappen units, including 12 in Chennai, have been deployed across the State.
The personnel have undergone training in self-defence, counter-attack techniques and firearm handling. The force will also utilise 49 drones for surveillance and respond to emergency calls received through helpline numbers 100, 112 and 1091.
