The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the police to release Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin on the same day after granting him bail in connection with a case registered over his alleged remarks made during a DMK protest in Thanjavur.
After police personnel reached Udhayanidhi Stalin’s residence in Neelankarai on Tuesday morning, an urgent petition was filed before the Madras High Court seeking to restrain the police from arresting him. When the matter was mentioned earlier, Justice G.K.
Ilanthiraiyan informed the State that the case would be taken up after 12 noon and advised the government counsel to avoid arresting Udhayanidhi Stalin until then. However, before the matter was heard, police arrested Udhayanidhi Stalin at his Neelankarai residence and took him to Thanjavur for investigation.
When the petition came up later, the hearing was initially adjourned to 2.15 p.m. as arrest-related documents had not been produced before the court.
On resumption of the hearing, Justice G.K. Ilanthiraiyan granted bail to Udhayanidhi Stalin. During the proceedings, the State informed the court that he would be released on station bail. Recording the submission, the court directed the police to ensure that Udhayanidhi Stalin is released on Tuesday itself.
