The Greater Chennai Corporation has signed memorandums of understanding with corporate partners to establish modern air-conditioned bus shelters at 11 locations across the city.
The initiative is part of the Corporation’s efforts to improve infrastructure and provide safer and more comfortable facilities for commuters and the public. The first phase will be implemented using funds contributed under corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
The 11 locations selected for the project are TMS on Anna Salai, Mylapore bus stop, Jawaharlal Nehru Road in Vadapalani, Vijayanagar bus terminus in Velachery, both approaches to SIMS Hospital in Vadapalani, Chinnamalai in Guindy, Avichi School on Arcot Road, Alandur Metro, and the north and south sides of Egmore.
The MoUs were signed with the participating organisations at the conference hall of the Ripon Buildings office in the presence of Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran and Police Commissioner Amalraj.
The new bus shelters will feature air-conditioned waiting areas, 24-hour CCTV surveillance, free Wi-Fi, ramps for persons with disabilities, digital displays providing bus route information, high-quality lighting, heat-resistant roofs, reinforced safety glass and USB charging points for mobile phones.
Additional senior officials, including Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) P. Samundeeswari, Joint Commissioner S. Saravanan, Chief Engineer P. Sankaravelu and Superintending Engineer M. Palani, attended the event.
