CCTV cameras, considered an important aid to the police in preventing and detecting crimes, are reportedly lying damaged or non-functional at several locations across Coimbatore city, raising concerns among residents and social activists.
A network of CCTV cameras installed across the city has been assisting the police in identifying suspects and investigating incidents, particularly road accidents and crimes occurring in areas with little or no public movement.
However, several cameras installed at various locations in the city, including in front of the District Collectorate, are reportedly either non-functional or damaged. Residents and social activists have expressed concern that the lack of surveillance could make it easier for offenders to carry out criminal activities without being detected.
They have urged the district administration and the authorities concerned to conduct regular maintenance of CCTV cameras, replace damaged units and install new cameras wherever necessary.
Residents and social activists said ensuring continuous CCTV surveillance across the city would help strengthen crime prevention and assist the police in detecting thefts and other offences.
