A 23-year-old unmarried woman, who was seven months pregnant, was allegedly murdered and her body packed in a sack and dumped into an agricultural well near Konganapuram in Salem district. Police have arrested Ammasi, 26, in connection with the murder.
The deceased, Kokila, daughter of Peraakounder, was from the Karungullan area of Konasamudram village under Konganapuram union. On August 20, she complained of severe stomach pain and was taken by her family to a nearby government primary health centre. Medical examination revealed that she was seven months pregnant.
Following a complaint from her family, police at the Sankagiri All Women Police Station conducted an inquiry. During the investigation, Ammasi, son of Mari of Kanniyampatti, was questioned. Police found that he was allegedly responsible for Kokila’s pregnancy.
Police reportedly advised Ammasi to marry Kokila. He allegedly told them that he would marry her after a temple festival in his village and took her to his house at Kanniyampatti.
Kokila later went missing from Ammasi’s house. After searching for her without success, her parents lodged another complaint at the Konganapuram Police Station.
Police subsequently recovered Kokila’s body from an agricultural well in the Thanakuttivalavu area of Vellalapuram village. The body had been packed in a sack.
During interrogation, Ammasi allegedly confessed to the murder. According to police, he had an argument with Kokila over her pregnancy and allegedly assaulted her before strangling her with her dupatta.
He allegedly packed her body in a sack, transported it on his two-wheeler during the night and dumped it into the agricultural well. He later informed Kokila’s family that she was missing and allegedly joined the search for her to conceal his involvement. Police arrested Ammasi and are conducting further investigation.
