Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam’s security cover has been downgraded from ‘Y’ category to ‘X’ category, with the armed police personnel deployed at his residence being withdrawn.
Panneerselvam, who served as Chief Minister three times during the AIADMK regime, had been provided ‘Y’ category security as a former Chief Minister.
He has also held posts including Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister.
The armed police personnel deployed at his residence have been recalled to the Armed Reserve.
The VIP vehicle escort provided to him has also been withdrawn. The ‘X’ category is considered basic security cover.
Police officials said security cover is provided based on a threat assessment conducted by central security agencies and approved by the Union Home Ministry.
According to the officials, the ‘Y’ category security provided to Panneerselvam has been withdrawn based on the latest threat assessment by the central security agencies.
