An awareness seminar on the eradication of drug and tobacco use was jointly organised by the Mother Social Service Organisation, the Tamil Nadu Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and the Thoothukudi District Police at the Kamaraj College auditorium in Thoothukudi.
Dr. S.J. Kennedy, Director of the Mother Social Service Organisation and a member of the District Health Council and District Tobacco Eradication Awareness Committee, presided over the programme.
Additional Superintendent of Police Sahay Jose attended as the chief guest. He inaugurated the seminar by planting saplings and delivered a special address.
Prohibition Wing Deputy Superintendent of Police Guruvenkatraj and Prohibition Enforcement Wing Inspector Mary Jemitha explained to the students the harmful effects of drug abuse and alcohol consumption.
Public Health Department Medical Officer Dr. P. Inigo and District Tobacco Control Cell Social Worker V. Rosari Fathima used audio-visual presentations to explain the diseases caused by substance abuse and the available treatment options.
Subsequently, in the presence of Mother Social Service Organisation Coordinator S. Bhanumathi and the special guests, students of Kamaraj College took an awareness pledge against drug and tobacco use.
The students pledged, “We will never use drugs, tobacco products or alcoholic beverages in our lives. We will work to create awareness against substance abuse in society and strive to build a drug-free Thoothukudi and a tobacco-free Tamil Nadu.”
Kamaraj College Principal Bhanumathi, Drug Eradication Coordinator M. Ayyanuraj, National Service Scheme Officer P. Anand, professors, college staff and a large number of students participated in the programme.
