Corpn plans to end dumping of garden waste at Vellalore

The Coimbatore Corporation has plans to set up a facility at the Vellalore dumpyard to process garden waste that is currently dumped separately at the site.
Around 10 tonnes of garden waste, including tree branches and other pruning waste, reaches the dumpyard every day.
The Corporation is holding preliminary discussions on installing a shredder and other equipment to process the waste and convert it into usable products, officials said.
The move comes in the wake of instances of garden waste catching fire at the dumpyard. On August 23, a fire had broken out in the garden waste dumped at the site.
Officials said nearly 100 tonnes of garden waste had accumulated at the dumpyard at one point.
Recently, Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja inspected the Vellalore dumpyard and the biomining facility operated there. Officials said more than 2.5 lakh tonnes of legacy waste remained at the site and the Corporation plans
to complete its biomining within this year.
The Corporation has also been using pulverisers in each of its five zones to process garden waste. However, not all of the waste generated in the zones is being processed through the machines, officials said.
The proposed facility at Vellalore is intended to provide a dedicated system for processing the garden waste reaching the dumpyard and reduce its accumulation at the site.
