College students hand over rs. 12 lakh gold and cash Left on train

Two college students who handed over a bag containing gold jewellery worth about Rs. 12 lakh and Rs. 1.91 lakh in cash, left behind on a suburban train, were commended by Railway Police Superintendent Rajan.
Heeralal, 50, of Ayappakkam in Tiruvallur district, runs a jewellery and pawn shop at ICF Colony in Ambattur. He boarded a Chennai Central-bound suburban electric train from Annanur railway station at around 3.30 p.m. on October 2 to purchase new jewellery.
He is said to have placed his shoulder bag on the overhead luggage rack and fallen asleep. When the train reached Chennai Central, he got down in a daze and inadvertently took another passenger’s bag.
After reaching Sowcarpet, Heeralal realised that the bag had been exchanged. He immediately lodged a complaint at the Chennai Central Railway Police Station.
Meanwhile, Jayasvel, 19, a third-year student of Loyola College, and Kamalesh, 20, a third-year student of DRBCC Hindu College, brought Heeralal’s bag to the Avadi Railway Police Station. They told the police that their bag had been exchanged during their train journey and that they had taken the bag from the luggage rack.
The bag handed over by the students contained 153.38 grams of gold jewellery, 30 grams of silver and Rs. 1.91 lakh in cash. The bag was subsequently brought to the Chennai Central Railway Police Station.
Heeralal was called to the station, where the contents of the bag were verified in the presence of Railway Police Inspector Amalarathinam. The gold jewellery and cash were later handed over to Heeralal in the presence of Nungambakkam Income Tax Department officials following due procedure.
Railway Police Superintendent Rajan personally appreciated Jayasvel and Kamalesh for their honesty in immediately handing over the valuables and cash to the railway police despite the bag containing jewellery and money worth several lakhs of rupees.
