SI Suspended for seeking Rs.10,000 bribe

A Special Assistant Sub-Inspector attached to the Umarabad police station has been suspended for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs.10,000 to release a Class 12 student from a case near Ambur in Tirupattur district.
A long-standing dispute had been prevailing between the families of Markapandhu and Manimegalai in Ramapuram, near Ambur, over a common pathway used by more than five families residing in the area. The dispute reportedly escalated into a verbal altercation and later a clash between the two sides.
Both parties lodged complaints at the Umarabad police station. Based on the complaints, Special Assistant Sub-Inspector Madhiyazhagan went to the area to conduct an inquiry. As Manimegalai was not at home, he allegedly took her Class 12 student son to the police station for questioning.
After the inquiry, Madhiyazhagan allegedly demanded Rs.10,000 from the boy’s parents, stating that the money had to be paid to release their son from the case.
Shocked by the demand, the parents immediately lodged a complaint with Tirupattur District Superintendent of Police Akshay Anil Vaghare. A preliminary inquiry conducted following the complaint reportedly found that Madhiyazhagan had demanded the bribe. The Superintendent of Police initially ordered his transfer to the Armed Reserve. After a further inquiry, the Superintendent of Police ordered Madhiyazhagan’s suspension. The action has caused a stir among the police department and the public in the district.
