Banana farm murder: Elderly woman found throat-slit near Karur

An elderly woman who went to a banana farm near Lalapettai in Karur district to cut grass for her cattle was found murdered with her throat slit, causing shock in the area.
The deceased was identified as Ilanchiyam, 60, of Vittukatti near Lalapettai. She had separated from her husband a few days after marriage and had been living with her elder sister’s family. She reared cattle and regularly collected grass from a banana plantation near Lalapettai railway station.
Ilanchiyam went to the plantation on the evening of October 6 but did not return home. Her relatives searched for her throughout the night. On the morning of October 7, they resumed the search and noticed bloodstains in the banana plantation. They later found Ilanchiyam’s body lying among the bushes with her throat slit.
Lalapettai police recovered the body and registered a case. Trichy Range DIG C.P. Chakravarthy and Karur Superintendent of Police Harikiran Prasad inspected the scene. Forensic personnel and a sniffer dog were also brought in as part of the investigation.
Police found that the nose ring worn by Ilanchiyam was missing. Investigators are examining whether she was murdered for jewellery.
