The Tamil Nadu government has issued a Government Order revising fares for contract carriage auto-rickshaws operating in Chennai Metropolitan areas and other parts of the State.
The revised fare structure has been notified under Section 67 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The earlier Government Orders issued in 2013 and 2014 have been cancelled and replaced by the new rates.
Under the revised structure, the minimum fare for an auto-rickshaw has been fixed at Rs. 50 for the first 1.8 km. An additional charge of Rs. 25 will be levied for every subsequent kilometre. The waiting charge has been fixed at Rs. 1 per minute.
For journeys along hill roads, the minimum fare has been fixed at Rs. 60, with an additional charge of Rs. 30 for every subsequent kilometre.
The government has also prescribed higher fares for night travel. Between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., passengers will be charged 1.5 times the normal fare. The revised rates aim to establish a uniform fare structure for contract carriage auto-rickshaws across Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu. Passengers and drivers are expected to follow the rates specified in the new Government Order.
