Uttarakhand Village Bans Gold At Weddings

In a move to promote simplicity and curb social inequality, Kandhar village in the Jhansi-Pawar area of Uttarakhand has banned married women from wearing gold jewellery at weddings and family functions.
The decision, taken during a recent meeting of village elders, also imposes a fine of ₹50,000 for those who violate the rule.
According to the new directive, married women are allowed to wear only gold earrings, nose rings, and thali (mangalsutra) during ceremonies.
Wearing heavy ornaments such as necklaces, bangles, or chains at weddings or social events has been strictly prohibited.
Village leaders explained that the decision was taken to prevent poor families from falling into debt to buy gold or maintain appearances during social gatherings. They said that the rising price of gold has pushed many into financial hardship as they try to match wealthier families.
“There is a growing culture of showmanship at weddings. Poor people borrow money to wear gold and appear affluent.
This decision aims to end such pressure and promote equality,” a village elder said.
Leaders emphasized that weddings should be simple and sacred, not platforms for displaying status. “Marriage is a sacred bond, not a display of luxury.
These rules ensure equality between the rich and the poor,” they said, adding that violators will be fined ₹50,000.
The decision from Kandhar village has sparked discussions across nearby areas, with many praising it as a bold social reform to reduce financial burden and promote equality.
