In a gruesome incident of domestic violence, a drunken man hacked off his wife’s right hand with a sickle and threw it into a pond at Nagakkudaiyan village near Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district on Tuesday.
Police said Madanraj and his wife Ilakkiya, married for love ten years ago, were residents of Nagakkudaiyan village. Ilakkiya runs a pharmacy in the Kathirikulam area. Madanraj, an alcoholic, had been repeatedly harassing her for money to consume liquor, leading to frequent quarrels between the couple.
On Tuesday, following another heated argument while intoxicated, Ilakkiya left the house and headed towards her parents’ residence. Madanraj chased her and attacked her with a sickle, severing her right hand on the spot. He then picked up the severed limb and threw it into a nearby pond.
Alerted by her screams, neighbours rushed to the scene, rescued Ilakkiya and admitted her to the Nagapattinam Government Medical College Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.
Police registered a case and arrested Madanraj. Further investigation is under way.
