A controversy has erupted in Madhya Pradesh after a senior BJP MLA attempted to bow at the feet of the son of Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, an incident that has sparked widespread discussion on social media and political circles.
The incident took place during the birthday celebrations of BJP MLA Devendra Kumar Jain (73). Among those present at the event was Maharyaman Scindia (31), son of Union Minister and BJP MP Jyotiraditya Scindia.
During the function, Maharyaman Scindia Cut a cake and fed it to the veteran legislator as part of the celebrations.
Soon after, Devendra Kumar Jain was seen attempting to touch the feet of Maharyaman Scindia, who is more than four decades younger than him.
The act, captured on video, quickly went viral on social media platforms and drew mixed reactions, with many questioning the appropriateness of the gesture and debating political culture and hierarchy within parties.
Responding to the criticism, Devendra Kumar Jain said he acted out of emotion and cultural sentiment.
He explained that he was moved when Maharyaman Scindia sang a birthday song for him and that the gesture was purely personal.
“There is nothing written in the Constitution that prevents someone from touching the feet of a younger person. This was my personal expression. I am not concerned about people making it viral,” the MLA said.
While the video has continued to circulate widely, senior BJP leaders have so far refrained from making any official comment on the episode.
The incident has nevertheless reignited conversations about symbolism, respect and power dynamics in contemporary politics.
